Did you know that Denver scored an “F” in American Lung Associatons's 2024
ranking of cities for air quality?
We scored 6th out of 227 cities.....with worst being #1.
In the 1970’s through the 1980’s, Denver had a brown cloud that hung over the city.
With each decade, pollution control measures enacted by the EPA helped clear our air and rid us of the “brown cloud”.
However, in the past 10-15 years, the air quality in our city
has deteriorated once again. The acceptable pollution levels established by the EPA are being exceeded regularly. And even these levels are not low enough.
This comes at the cost of our residents' health.
On this website, we discuss the sources of our air pollution, the problems it causes and what we can do to eliminate it. Because the good news is we can change things! And we are. Read below about our work with public schools in and around Denver. We also are working with health departments and non profits in north Denver and Adams County to lower in home air pollution. Read more below.
Fortunately, we now have solutions to get rid of the dirty air in our city. We have arranged our solutions into several categories: Lawn Equipment, Clean Mobility, Clean Schools, Clean Buildings, Clean Colorado, and Denver Legislation. Combining technological advances with political action, SmogFree Denver aims to empower Denver citizens with practical steps that both save us money and improve the health of our communities.

Let’s get rid of the Brown Cloud once and for all.
WHAT WE DO
As a non profit organization, we advocate for clean air, acquire grants to deploy and support the communities most affected by air pollution.
In 2021 we acquired a grant to help schools near north Denver and in Adams county help transition their lawn equipment from gas to electric. We accomplished this in 2023. We also acquired funds for deep cleaning of these schools which was accomplished in 2022. In 2024-2025 we will be helping residents of north Denver and southern Adams county address their local air pollution. We are distributing hundreds of in home air purifiers to residents. See the "Our Work" page for more.
