VICE PRESIDENT--Joel Strohecker, DO

Theron Makley is a former high tech executive now focused on preventing air pollution and accelerating climate action. He has led high-performing sales, technology and marketing teams in large multinational corporations and in small local startups. Theron thrives on developing collaborative relationships among diverse teams and helping others produce results to their fullest potential. He joined Joel in starting DeSmog Denver due to concerns about deteriorating air quality across the Colorado Front Range in spite of being ranked poor in air quality and out of compliance for many successive years. When time allows, Theron enjoys snow skiing, fly-fishing, and live-music venues.

VICE PRESIDENT--Joel Strohecker, DO

Dr. Strohecker is a full time hospitalist in the Denver metro area. His concern over Denver's air pollution started a decade ago when hiking in the foothills he noted the brown cloud hanging over the city. Subsequent research on air pollution and its negative effects on public health  concerned him.  Few medical training programs teach this topic. He is dedicated to helping medical professionals learn more about air pollution and organizing ways to combat it.

TREASURER--Kelly Gahan, MD

Lito comes to the environmental movement after spending over ten years in the Oil and Gas industry as a mechanical engineer. Lito is passionate about DeSmog Denver's role in advocating for alternative fuel sources and the adoption of sustainable practices for a future with better air quality.

TREASURER--Kelly Gahan, MD

Dr. Gahan is an Emergency Room Physician in Denver.  As a physician on the frontline of medical care, she sees firsthand the effects of worsening air pollution on her patients.  Over the past decade, the intense wildfire seasons and worsening ozone conditions have especially affected her patients with asthma and other respiratory illnesses.  She helped found DeSmog Denver to fight that pollution and to raise her patient's awareness of it.

James Crooks, PhD, MS

Nichole St. Germain, RN

Nichole St. Germain, RN

As a researcher and epidemiologist, Dr. Crooks has produced studies on air pollution, dust pollution and climate change.  His research has led him to advocate strongly for measures that curb air pollution and lower carbon emissions.  He is a frequent lecturer to both medical and non medical groups on these topics.  He works at National Jewish Health, the #1 hospital in the country for respiratory illnesses.

Nichole St. Germain, RN

A native of Vermont, Nichole moved to Denver to enjoy our great city and its surrounding mountains. However as a nurse and a new mother, she became concerned with Denver's air quality after the summer of 2020. There were numerous days where the air quality was incredibly poor and she was concerned about the impacts it could have on her newborn's health. This motivated her to get involved in cleaning our city's air.

Arti Karna, MD

Nichole St. Germain, RN

Maggie Holmes, RN

Dr Karna moved from the East coast to Denver to be able to merge city life with nature.  After experiencing preterm labor with the birth of her child and after her child spent months in NICU and went home on oxygen, she became troubled by Denver's air quality. She questioned if our city's poor air quality had a possible impact on her pre term labor as many studies show it does. Now having come through that she wants to make sure the city and  its air is as healthy as possible for everyone.

Bryce Shaffer, PhD

Maggie Holmes, RN

Maggie is a registered nurse who moved from Connecticut to Denver about 3 years ago.  She and her dog, Duke, enjoy hiking, camping and spending time outdoors.  She first became aware of Denver's poor quality in the summer of 2020, after finding it difficult to breath in every day situations.  Concern for her own health, and for the health of the students she cares for as a high school nurse, has pushed her to become involved in improving air quality in Denver and surrounding areas.

Bryce is the CEO of Air Squared, an oil free compressor manufacturer in Broomfield CO. At Air Squared, Bryce has overseen the development and production launch of the world's first liquid-cooled scroll compressor used for electric vehicle truck and bus air brake systems which now account for more than half Air Squrareds turnover. Bryce believes there's opportunity for small manufacturing companies as suppliers in the automotive industry as electrification continues to force traditional companies to rethink their products and current supplier base. For this reason, Air Squared supports electrification from both an environmental and economic opportunity standpoint.

After learning to rock climb in the Marine Corps, Nick returned to the Denver area and began noticing the "brown cloud" over Denver during his frequent climbing trips to North Table Mountain. Nick works in the renewable energy sector, but at home he has become increasingly aware of the numerous low air quality days in the Denver area, especially seeing how it affects his young children who are sensitive to the smoky days during wildfire season.
